There may be fewer than 8,000 people who call Lake Geneva home, but that in no way means that our resort town lacks excitement. For those of us who are fortunate enough to live in this area, tourism is a way of life. With people visiting from as far away as Chicago, Milwaukee and beyond, we are always coping with drivers who are navigating our road system for the first time. That is why we here at Glass Insurance Center have put together a few tips for staying safe in a destination community. Continue reading to learn how you can protect yourself and your passengers against inexperienced visitors.
Be Aware of Popular Tourism Seasons
Tourists always want to know where the locals go, but locals should be equally aware of where the tourists go. This one is a little tricky since Lake Geneva is truly a year-round destination with plenty to see and do throughout the town. However, there are times of the year that are seemingly more popular than others. For example, you are sure to find more tourists on Geneva Lake during the summer months and when the town is decorated for the holidays. People also descend on the town for special events, such as Winterfest, Oktoberfest, and the annual Antique & Classic Boat Show. Avoid these areas for daily commutes during heightened tourism seasons
Look Out for Pedestrians
People love to walk when they are on vacation. Some areas in our town are hotspots for pedestrian activity. Be extra aware, for example, when driving downtown, as many people stay at a downtown hotel or bed and breakfast so they are within walking distance of the lake and other attractions. In fact, all of downtown is popular with pedestrians staying in the area – including those who do not always cross at crosswalks. While it is Wisconsin law to yield to pedestrians in a controlled intersection, always yield to pedestrians walking in front of your vehicle – even if they do not have the right of way.
Be Aware of Impervious Drivers
It’s easy to get frustrated when you are driving in a new place, facing congested roads, and don’t know where you are going or where to park. As a local, make sure you are constantly aware of visiting drivers who may be experiencing rage or who may be distracted by GPS devices.
Be Aware of Alternate GPS Routes
There is nothing more frustrating than walking to your car only to find that your typically quiet road has been filled with a long line of cars following a detour offered in real-time by GPS mapping. Often, these routes are automatically calculated when traffic has slowed in a particular area. They tend to be the same, so you may be able to anticipate dangerous back-ups during peak tourism season.
